Get onboard

Designing out plastic.

How is it an example of alternative materials:

Get onboard a project by PriestmanGoode and the Design Museums Reduce, Reuse and Rethink exhibition saw a redesign of how single use plane food is served and interacted with. Eliminating plastic, reducing weight and replacing components with either edible or commercially compostable materials are key design strategies used within this project.

Surrounding sustainable information

The design around the use, interactions and disposal shaped the material and form choice. “All waste items can be kept inside the main meal lid, which closes down into a compostable pack for more efficient disposal.”

Edible alternatives have been used to swap over single use plastics, and to lower weight of waste. “The studio found that an average of 500 grams of single-use plastic waste is produced per person on every long-haul flight.”

The design shows the important of material choice and form when implemented on both a small and large scale. These decisions play a pivotal role on the overall sustainable accreditation and environmental impact.
